Today, Idlib Governorate witnessed the installation of the first smart water meter as part of the digital transformation project in the water sector. The installation took place at the headquarters of the General Company for Drinking Water and Sanitation in Idlib, attended by Minister of Energy Eng. Mohammed Al-Bashir, Idlib Governor Mr. Mohammed Abdul Rahman, Assistant Minister for Water and Electricity Affairs Eng. Osama Abu Zaid, Director General of the General Establishment for Drinking Water and Sanitation Eng. Taher Al-Omar, and Director General of the General Company for Drinking Water and Sanitation Eng. Ibrahim Al-Yamani.
The installation of the first meter in Idlib falls within the framework of the agreement signed between the General Establishment for Drinking Water and Sanitation and the Saudi Meter Company. The agreement stipulates the import and installation of five million smart water meters, with the first phase involving the installation of 300,000 meters across the governorates of Damascus, Damascus Countryside, and Idlib.
Installing the first meter in Idlib marks the beginning of the Ministry's plan to adopt a modern metering system based on smart meters. This system enables accurate consumption readings, improves billing procedures, enhances the efficiency of operational network monitoring, and paves the way for the gradual expansion of the system across the targeted governorates.
The Ministry of Energy emphasizes that the smart meter project will be implemented gradually. The initiative aims to build an accurate consumption database, control water loss, improve service quality, and enhance the efficiency of water network management, all in line with the Ministry's strategic direction to modernize service infrastructure and ensure reliable water supply for citizens.
