Signing of a Technical Services Agreement to Prepare Studies for the Development of an Integrated Water Sources, Desalination, and Water Transmission System in Syria
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy and in the presence of Deputy Minister of Energy for Water and Electricity Affairs, Eng. Osama Abu Zaid, a technical services agreement was signed to prepare studies for the development of an integrated system for water sources, desalination, and water transmission in Syria. The agreement was concluded in cooperation with ACWA Power and Saudi Arabia’s Water Transmission Company (WTCO), with the participation of Germany’s Fichtner as the project’s technical consultant.
The signing was attended by Eng. Ahmad Al-Kawwan, Director General of the General Authority for Water Resources; Eng. Taher Al-Omar, Director General of the Public Establishment for Drinking Water and Wastewater; Mr. Firas Kardoush, Director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Energy; and businessman Mr. Raad Al-Saadi.
The agreement was signed on the Syrian side by Eng. Ahmad Al-Kawwan, while Mr. Raad Al-Saadi signed on behalf of ACWA Power and Saudi Arabia’s Water Transmission Company, marking the beginning of the studies and consultancy work required for the project.
The agreement aims to prepare preliminary feasibility studies based on an assessment of the current water situation, identifying current and future water needs and shortages, and examining the optimal combination of seawater desalination and the use of surface and groundwater resources. The studies will ultimately develop a vision for an integrated water system combining natural water sources, desalination plants, and water transmission systems.
The studies will explore solutions for desalination and water transmission with a capacity of up to 1.2 million cubic meters per day, along with a water transmission system extending approximately 400 kilometers, supporting national efforts to enhance water security and achieve long-term sustainability.
The agreement represents an important foundational step toward developing one of the strategic projects in Syria’s water sector by basing investment and implementation decisions on comprehensive technical, engineering, and economic studies, contributing to securing sustainable water sources that meet citizens’ needs and support future development.
