Syrian-Turkish Talks to Develop the Mining Sector, Downstream Industries, and Geothermal Energy Toward Comprehensive Investment Agreements
An expanded specialized working meeting was held in Damascus between the Syrian Mining Company and a high-level Turkish delegation specializing in mining affairs. The meeting was attended by the Ministry of Energy’s Deputy Ministers, Eng. Osama Abu Zeid for Water and Electricity Affairs and Eng. Ibrahim Al-Adhan for Planning and Institutional Excellence, as well as the CEO of the Syrian Mining Company, Mr. Siraj Al-Hariri, alongside the directors general and CEOs of the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA), the International Mining Company, and Türkiye’s Eti Maden.
The meeting discussed moving from the stage of memoranda of understanding to executive investment agreements in the mineral resources sector, with a focus on developing phosphate investment projects and downstream industries based on chemical and mining processing, thereby generating added value from national resources.
The discussions also covered opportunities to invest in iron ore to support local industries and the reconstruction phase, in addition to exploring prospects for cooperation in geothermal energy as a promising source of clean and renewable energy. The talks further included developing a joint program to modernize mining laboratories and equip them with the latest technologies, as well as strengthening capacity building and scientific research through specialized training programs and sending engineers to pursue postgraduate studies in geology and mining.
The meeting represents a pivotal step toward translating mutual understandings into field projects and binding investment agreements, supporting the national economy and advancing the mining sector in line with international standards.
