Minister of Energy Eng. Mohammad Al-Bashir announced the start of natural gas deliveries through Jordan to the Nasiriyah Power Plant in the Damascus countryside during a field visit to the facility. He was accompanied by Eng. Omar Shaqrouq, Deputy Minister of Energy for Electricity Affairs, and Eng. Mohammad Fadila, Director General of the Public Establishment for Electricity Generation.
During the visit, the minister held a meeting with the plant's management and several technical officials, chaired by the plant's director, Eng. Zakaria Qaddah. He was briefed on the plant's current operations, the challenges it faces, and the aspirations of its workforce.
The minister also toured the plant's various sections before officially launching its restart by opening the gas supply valve and initiating the flow of natural gas through Jordan for electricity generation.
The Nasiriyah Power Plant has a generating capacity of approximately 450 megawatts. Its return to service is expected to increase Syria's total electricity generation to around 3,000 megawatts for the first time in years. In recent years, the plant had been operating at only about 30% of its production capacity due to shortages in natural gas supplies.
