Agreement for the Maintenance of Jandar Power Plant to Improve Electricity Supply in Several Syrian Governorates
Under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy, an agreement was signed today between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Japan, valued at USD 12.4 million, to support the stabilization of energy supplies in conflict-affected areas. The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Akihiro Tsuji, Chargé d’Affaires of the Japanese Embassy in Damascus, Dr. Mohammad Madawi, Resident Representative of UNDP in Syria, and Deputy Ministers of Energy Eng. Omar Shaqrouq for Electricity Affairs and Eng. Ibrahim Al-Addahan for Planning and Institutional Excellence.
The agreement aims to maintain Units 1 and 2 at the Jandar Power Plant in Homs in order to ensure the stable supply of up to 540 megawatts of electricity to the national grid. This is expected to increase electricity availability and primarily serve the governorates of Damascus, Rural Damascus, Homs, Hama, and Deir ez-Zor.
The maintenance works include conducting technical assessments to identify urgent priorities and needs, procuring and installing original spare parts, supervising installation activities, and providing training for engineers and technicians. These measures are expected to improve the efficiency and reliability of the power grid and strengthen national capacities in operation and preventive maintenance.
The project will be financed by the Government of Japan and implemented by UNDP under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy. The implementation period is expected to extend over 24 months
