Syrian Minister of Energy, Eng. Mohammad Al-Bashir, participated in the Syrian-German Forum held in Berlin as part of an official delegation headed by His Excellency the President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Mr. Ahmed Al-Sharaa, and with the participation of several ministers.
In his speech, Mr. Al-Bashir emphasized that the energy sector in Syria has suffered widespread destruction over the past years, at a time when countries worldwide were transitioning toward clean and renewable energy. He pointed out that the Syrian government has adopted an investment-oriented approach in this sector, considering it one of the promising fields, and has already begun implementing strategic projects since last year.
The Minister explained that the Ministry of Energy has signed several major agreements, most notably an agreement to generate 5,000 MW, in addition to solar and wind renewable energy projects with a capacity of approximately 4,700 MW. He noted that German companies have had a prominent presence in these projects, led by Siemens.
Mr. Al-Bashir clarified that about 2,000 MW of electricity will be generated through turbines manufactured by Siemens, whose current production in Syria stands at around 1,000 MW, in addition to other power stations operating under its licenses and approvals that generate approximately 1,400 MW.
The Minister also pointed out that Siemens owns 103 low-voltage substations and 6 high-voltage substations in the country.
Furthermore, the Minister revealed plans to continue cooperation with German companies by signing new agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs). Among these is an MoU with Siemens to build a control and operation system for the Syrian electrical grid, alongside another MoU with Knauf in the field of gypsum board manufacturing.
Concluding his speech, Mr. Al-Bashir extended his gratitude to the German governmental and private entities that have supported the energy sector in Syria, particularly KfW and GIZ, expressing his hope that the forum would serve as a launching pad to strengthen bilateral partnerships in the coming period.
